WHAT IS AN INTEGRATED MANAGEMENT SYSTEM?

An integrated management system or IMS consolidates all the business processes into one single system of management, resulting in a management system that is leaner, more effective, more efficient and easier to follow than having a number of separate systems. An IMS better meets the needs of the business, its management and operations by streamlining similar processes to avoid duplication, with a focus on providing good business outcomes.

If you have ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and or ISO 45001 there are many common elements which allow for a seamless integration of these standards into one management system. The table below demonstrates the common elements in white with specific requirements for ISO 9001 in blue, ISO 14001 in green and ISO 45001 in red some of these are shared in the various standards. 

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN OHSAS 18001 AND ISO 45001?

The main difference is that ISO 45001 concentrates the business environment as a whole and as the new standard perfectly aligns with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 it allows for an integrated management system of all 3 standards. 

  • ISO 45001 is process-based – OHSAS 18001 is procedure-based
  • ISO 45001 considers both risk and opportunities – OHSAS 18001 deals exclusively with risk
  • ISO 45001 includes the views of interested parties – OHSAS 18001 does not
IS IT NECESSARY TO HAVE CERTIFICATION TO ISO 45001?

Simply having a formal management system in place will bring many benefits of its own through enforcing best practice.

Many organisations who already have certification to ISO 9001 and or ISO 14001 may want to implement the additional requirements of the ISO 45001 standard to assist them in establishing OH&S management system. 

If you need to demonstrate to external parties that have achieved full compliance with the standard then certification will be required.
